ocr: Nicaragua's army was tormed from the Sandinista forces that overthrew the Somoza regime. It grew to be the region's largest (134,000 troops) during the war with the Contras. By 1993,its numbers had fallen to 15,000. The USA has been pressing for the removal of General Humberto Urtega as leader ofthe Sandimista-controlled army as a condition for the resumption offullaid.
